Apple @45: How these Apple products changed the tech industry and more

45 years ago three men - Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne - started Apple Computer Company in a garage. Over the years through a multitude of highs and lows Apple has emerged as one of the biggest - and most recognised - companies in the world. Apple with its products and services has been at the forefront of changing the technology landscape. Here we list out the many ways Apple changed the tech industry:

?Apple I: The first computer designed by Apple

Designed and built by Steve Wozniak, Apple I was launched in 1976 at $666.66. It started off Apple′s momentous journey and the next four years Apple′s revenues grew quite fast.

iPod: Changed the music 'game′ forever

MP3 players existed before and after iPod. But none had the cool quotient of iPod. First launched in October 2001, the iPod not only was a game-changer but started the cult of Apple in many ways. The iPod sold 100 million units across the world in its first six years.

?Being first doesn′t matter, getting right does

One of the most common critiques levelled at Apple is that it always gets features that have been around. FaceID, TouchID to name a few fall under that category. But no one got it right the way Apple did. The simplicity and ease of use in Apple′s products and services remain unmatched, which is why Apple may not be the 'first′ but it is often right.

Macintosh: The start of something 'new′ which shook Apple

In 1984, Apple launched Macintosh and it was a big deal simply because it was the first personal computer sold without any programming language. Apple made an ad for Macintosh called 1984 which is considered one of the best commercials of all time. Macintosh started off well but Steve Jobs had several run-ins with the then CEO John Sculley. Ultimately, Jobs resigned in 1985 and sometime later Wozniak also left the company.

Apple Watch: 'End′ of swiss watchmakers dominance; the company becomes the world′s biggest watchmaker

It′s a good pub trivia question: do you know which is the biggest watchmaker in the world? As you would′ve guessed it is none other than Apple. First launched in 2015, the Apple Watch has become huge and is the most sold watch in the world. Loaded with health and fitness features, Apple with the Watch is eyeing more innovations in the health space.

?Apple Stores: Retail outlets could also be cool

In 2001, Apple opened its first Store in Mclean, Virginia. An Apple Store was unlike any other retail stores and remains so. Apple Stores all over the world have become landmarks. In fact, it is said that the 5th Avenue Apple Store in New York gets more visitors than the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building.

?App Store: The world has never been the same

Getting software or applications was a nightmare before the App Store came along. It gave developers and consumers a platform where getting apps was ridiculously simple. In typical Apple style, the company wasn′t the first to launch a marketplace for apps. But it did in style and with so much ease that App Store remains synonymous with apps.

?MacBook Air: Thin became in

Before the MacBook Air came on the horizon, laptops had to be lugged around. When Steve Jobs unveiled he took it out of a Manila envelope. MacBook Air changed the design of laptops forever and continues to be a popular product in Apple′s portfolio.

?iPhone: Smartphones were never the same again

In 2007, Apple introduced the first iPhone to the world. The smartphone industry since then has always been Before iPhone and After iPhone. The iPhone caught the imagination of almost everyone who wanted a smartphone. In the first 30 hours of going on sale, Apple had sold about 2.7 lakh iPhones. Since then the iPhone is one of the most recognised products in the world, has sold millions across the world and remains Apple′s flagship product.

iPad: The only tablet that was and is still cool

The iPad ushered in a new product category for Apple - tablets. The first iPad wowed the world. So much so that The Economist put Jobs on the cover in a Jesus-like illustration with the headline: The Book of Jobs - Hope, hype and Apple′s iPad. Many big companies tried to beat Apple at the tablet game but the iPad remains as strong as ever and the tablet market remains littered with corpses of failed Android tablets.

Privacy matters: For Apple and it should for users

Apple has always been at the forefront of privacy. Be it the devices or software and services, Apple has been extra cautious with user data. Other tech companies - Facebook mainly - has always been at loggerheads with Apple over it. However, Apple remains privacy-focused and CEO Tim Cook even referred to it as a 'fundamental human right.

Macintosh 128K iMac: The first product under Jobs 2.0

In 1998, Apple introduced Macintosh 128K iMac, its first product under Jobs′ second stint at Apple. The product was also designed by Jony Ive - the 'star′ design head who changed Apple′s design philosophy.

AirPods: By cutting the cord, Apple struck a chord

On the face of it, the AirPods are too simple. Apple had wired EarPods - the earphones that came bundled with iPhone - and it cut the cord to make AirPods. However, the AirPods started a craze that shows no end in sight. Every brand worth its salt has gotten into the true wireless space but no one has managed to beat Apple as it remains the leader by far in the market.

The ′fanboy′ culture

Companies have had customers - and loyal ones - but no one had fanboys. Except for Apple. There′s a cult of Apple - strong as ever - and there are millions who swear by the company and its products. Other brands have their loyal set of consumers but none come close to Apple - which does annoy a lot of people as well.

The first company to hit $2 trillion market cap

In the US, Apple has hit several financial milestones. In terms of market cap, Apple has been the first company to hit a valuation of $1 trillion and then it touch $2 trillion as well.

Holi tips: 8 ways to protect your smartphones and other gadgets

If you are planning to attend a Holi party and play with a lot of colours then it is a good idea to take care of your gadgets. Apart from worrying about colour stains, you also need to secure your device and be safe while charging them. Here are 10 ways to protect your smartphones and other gadgets while playing Holi.

Use a plastic zip lock bag to protect your smartphone from colours

Use a plastic zip lock bag to prevent gulal or other dry colours from entering the ports of your smartphone.

Use a pattern or PIN to secure your phone instead of biometric lock

Before heading for the Holi party, replace the biometric lock like Face ID or fingerprint with PIN, password or pattern to secure your phone. Your device may not be able to recognise your coloured face.

Protect the ports of the smartphone at all cost

Use a tape to cover the openings like speakers, mic, charging port and headphone jack. This will prevent dry colours from getting stuck inside.

Do not charge a smartphone when it′s wet

Never try to charge a smartphone if it gets wet as there′s a risk of electrical shocks.

Do not use hair dryer to dry a wet smartphone

Smartphones have many delicate components that may stop working if you use a hair dryer to blow harsh hot air to dry your phone. Also, the adhesive securing the rear panel of the smartphone may melt due to the hot air.

Do not carry a power bank while playing Holi

Most power banks are not water-resistant and it could be quite risky if your power bank comes in contact with water while playing Holi.

How to protect your TWS earbuds from colour stains

If at all you wish to carry your TWS earbuds to the Holi party, then apply a light coating of moisturiser on them. It will prevent the colours from sticking to it and won′t leave a stain. Also, it will be easier to wipe colour later in case a bit is left on the buds. Even if your earbuds are IP68 waterproof, do not wear them to a wet Holi party as the colour may stick to the soft foam or silicone eartips making them look ugly later once the colour dries.

How to protect your smartwatch or smartband during Holi party:

If you are wearing a smartwatch to a Holi party then it is highly advisable that you use a wrist band to cover smartwatch or smartband while at the party. While smartbandes or smartwatches are mostly IP68 waterproof, the wristband will prevent colours from leaving a permanent stain. If you can′t find a wristband, simply use a plastic bag to cover it.

10 things to do before selling your Android smartphone

You feel you need to switch to a brand new Android phone and want to sell the current (also Android) one but are dreading how to proceed with saving all the data on the current phone? We have got you covered with this guide that details 10 important things to do before selling your Android smartphone. Get both--the new and the old phones--with you and go through our step-by-step guide.Backup your contacts

If you are an Android user and use Google apps a lot, make sure you backup your contacts. If your contacts are not already synced to the Gmail account, you can do so manually by going to https://contacts.google.com/.

Backup your messages and call records

Just like your contacts, you can backup your messages and call records too. Your messages can be backed up by using third-party software like SMS Backup and Restore. You can create a backup for your messages by saving them on Google Drive and can restore from there in your new phone. The same app can be used to backup your call records too.

Backup your photos, videos and other media over the Cloud or to an external storage device

You can either go for a Cloud backup by using Google Photos, Google Drive, Microsoft′s OneDrive, DropBox or any reliable Cloud service or you can physically transfer the media files to an external hard drive or SSD.

Log out from and remove all accounts before factory reset

A factory reset will erase everything on a smartphone but it doesn′t log you out of the Google account(s). So, ensure that you log out of all the Google accounts and other online accounts before going for a factory reset. You can check for logged-in accounts by searching for "accounts" in phone settings or go to "Accounts" via Gmail settings.

Check for and remove microSD cards

Remove the microSD cards, if you are using any, from your phone. But first check the data it stores is safe within.

Don′t forget to remove the SIM card

This is something you need not be told, but still, do not forget to take out your SIM card.

Create a WhatsApp backup

To save your WhatsApp chats before shifting to a new phone, create a chat backup from WhatsApp settings on Google. You can choose to include or not include some files in your chat. Then when you do a fresh install of WhatsApp on your new device, you can restore the chat backup.

Check if your phone is encrypted

Before proceeding with a factory reset, check if your Android phone is encrypted. If not, you can do so manually through phone settings. Encryption makes it very hard for someone else to access data on your phone after a factory reset. Most new Android phones come already encrypted but the old ones aren′t.

Factory reset is a must

Now, when you are sure that you have made a backup of all the important files in your phone and it is encrypted also, you can proceed to do a factory reset. Search for "reset" in phone settings and select "Erase all data (factory reset)". Doing this will erase everything on your smartphone.

Clean your old phone and put it with all accessories back in the box; will help get better price

You should first wipe your old phone with a clean cloth, preferably one moist with a disinfectant solution. Not a must but just a tip to get rid of the traces of the dust and all that bacteria lodged on the device surface. We are assuming you have kept the phone box and the accessories that came when you purchased it. Put your phone and accessories inside the box. Now, you are ready to sell it.
