5G From Galaxy S21 to new apps, heres what you need to know

After years of hype and a bumpy first year of launches, carrier 5G networks are here and, most importantly, 5G-compatible phones like the iPhone 12 and Pixel 5. (Samsung′s next expected flagship phone, the Galaxy S21, will likely feature 5G too.) The technology is supposed to change your life with its revolutionary speed and responsiveness. But before we get into that, it′s important to understand what it is, when and how it will affect you, and how to distinguish between (the still growing) hype and the reality.

In 2019, CNET held a massive speed test of 5G networks around the world, spanning from Chicago to London to Sydney to Seoul. The results were a mix of ludicrous speeds, but limited range and spotty coverage. Conversely, you would see wider coverage with a modest bump in speed. You also saw devices like the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G roll out. The early generation of 5G phones boasted impressive speeds at times, but we cautioned against buying them because of compatibility issues and other problems that arise with new technology.

And over the course of 2020, things have gotten much better. Carriers continue to expand 5G coverage into more cities, and new devices compatible with multiple networks are coming out, with AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon all now announcing nationwide coverage. But just how quickly that life-changing aspect of 5G will arrive remains up in the air. That′s exacerbated by the novel coronavirus, which has locked down millions around the world, slowing down the 5G rollout and dampening consumer enthusiasm for pricey new devices, even with those stimulus checks.

All this means 5G is advancing from years of promises - ever since Verizon talked about moving into the area four and a half years ago to AT&T kicking off the first official mobile network at the end of 2018 and T-Mobile going nationwide in December - to becoming reality for more consumers. Beyond a big speed boost, 5G has been referred to as foundational tech that′ll supercharge areas like self-driving cars, virtual and augmented reality and telemedicine services such as remote surgery. It will eventually connect everything from farming equipment to security cameras and, of course, your smartphone.

But what exactly is 5G? Why are people so excited? The following is a breakdown of why the next generation of wireless technology is more than just a boost in speed. (If you′re really interested, check out our glossary of 5G terms.)

What is 5G?

It′s the next (fifth) generation of cellular technology, and it promises to greatly enhance the speed, coverage and responsiveness of wireless networks. How fast are we talking? Carriers like Verizon and AT&T have shown speeds surging past 1 gigabit per second.

That′s 10 to 100 times speedier than your typical cellular connection, and even faster than anything you can get with a physical fiber-optic cable going into your house. (In optimal conditions, you′ll be able to download a season′s worth of Stranger Things in seconds.)

Is it just about speed?

No! One of the key benefits is something called low latency. You′ll hear this term a lot. Latency is the response time between when you click on a link or start streaming a video on your phone, which sends the request up to the network, and when the network responds, delivering you the website or playing your video.

That lag time can last around 20 milliseconds with current networks. It doesn′t seem like much, but with 5G, that latency gets reduced to as little as 1 millisecond, or about the time it takes for a flash on a normal camera.

That responsiveness is critical for things like playing an intense video game in virtual reality or for a surgeon in New York to control a pair of robotic arms performing a procedure in San Francisco. You know that little lag when you′re on a Zoom video conference call? 5G will help eliminate some of those awkward, "Sorry, you go ahead" moments after people talk over each other. That lag time won′t completely go away, especially if you′re communicating with someone halfway around the world. The distance matters, since that info still has to travel there and back.

But a virtually lag-free connection means self-driving cars have a way to communicate with each other in real time - assuming there′s enough 5G coverage to connect those vehicles.

We′re not quite there yet with existing 5G networks, but the industry is working to trim down that latency so those hypotheticals become reality. Are there other benefits?

A 5G network is designed to connect a far greater number of devices than a traditional cellular network does. That internet of things trend you keep hearing about? 5G can power multiple devices around you, whether it′s a dog collar or a refrigerator.

In addition, the 5G network was built to handle gear used by businesses, such as farm equipment or ATMs, and can adjust for differing needs. For example, some products like sensors for farming equipment don′t need a constant connection. Those kinds of low-power scanners are intended to work on the same battery for 10 years and still be able to periodically send data.

Will it cost more?

Verizon requires its customers to sign up for one of its newest plans, and to get access to the fastest flavor of 5G, you′ll need to get one of its top two most expensive plans (out of a total of four).

AT&T likewise requires that you sign up for one of its premium tiers of unlimited data plans.

"5G brings capabilities that are going to cause us to think different about pricing," AT&T said. "We expect pricing to be at a premium to what we charge today."

But Jeff McElfresh, CEO of AT&T Communications, which is the wireless, broadband and subscription video services arm of the telecom and media giant, teased that more affordable 5G is coming.

"You should not assume that 5G is an exclusive capability for the most expensive handsets and found only in the most expensive rate plans," he said in an interview in May. "The speed at which the technology is beginning to make its way into the network is unparalleled."

There′s precedent for holding the line on pricing: LTE didn′t cost any more when it first came out; you just needed to buy a new phone. But pricing models do change over time. Since 4G launched, carriers have both taken away unlimited plans and brought them back.

Verizon′s home broadband service costs $50 for wireless subscribers, and $70 for everyone else. Those are in line with other broadband costs. (You can find out if you′re eligible for the service here.)

T-Mobile, for its part, throws 5G into all of its plans, including grandfathered Sprint plans.

Mi Mix Fold is first smartphone to have shape-shifting liquid lens camera, here is how it works

Xiaomi′s first foldable smartphone is here. The Mi Mix Fold was launched in China on Tuesday during a two-day keynote by the electronics maker. The new Mi Mix smartphone features a 108-megapixel main camera, an inward-folding design, dual-screen form factor as the Samsung Galaxy Fold series, 67W fast charging but what makes this smartphone stand out, is the liquid lens on one of its rear cameras.

Mi Mix Fold is world′s first smartphone with Liquid Lens technology which uses the principle of human eye bionics, “forming a lens-like structure with a transparent fluid wrapped in film, very different from traditional optical lenses.”

In simple words, the camera uses a motor to precisely manipulate a packet of fluid, which allows the camera to switch between Telephoto Mode (3x optical zoom or 30x hybrid zoom) and maintain a minimum focus distance of 3cm. Xiaomi claims that this helps one lens to cover the functions of two lenses. The Liquid Lens helps users shoot from close distances as well as take wide shots.

The Liquid Lens also offers high light transmittance, ultra-low dispersion and excellent resistance to extreme environments. Xiaomi has said that the fluid works fine in temperatures ranging from -40°C to 60°C (or -40°F to 140°F).

As for the camera system, the smartphone is equipped with a 108-megapixel main camera, a 13-megapixel ultra-wide angle camera and an 8-megapixel bionic camera. It′s the last that features the Liquid Lens to offer four photography modes.

This isn′t the only change from Xiaomi to boost the camera system on its smartphones. It has also developed its own image signal processor, the Surge C1, which the company claimed delivers faster autofocus, auto white balance and auto exposure. Xiaomi claims that the new chip enables an improved 3A algorithm and low-light focus capabilities for more accurate auto focus, auto exposure and auto white balance, significantly improving image quality.

Mi Mix Fold features

Mi Mix Fold features an 8.01-inch 2,480 x 1,860 (4:3) foldable panel, which supports Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and a maximum brightness of 600 nits. The smartphone folds inwards to offer a 6.52-inch AMOLED panel on the cover with a narrow 2,520 x 840 resolution, along with Dolby Vision support and a higher 700-nit brightness.

The smartphone is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G processor, with up to 16GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage. There′s also a generous 5,020mAh battery with 67W turbo charging support.Live TV

Google Meet to give free video calls up to 24 hours to personal Gmail account users till June

It has been over a year since people moved to video conferencing for work, studies, and other remote activities like birthdays and even weddings. Some office-goers are slowly resuming their work as they usher into physical spaces while a large number are still stuck behind screens. Video conferencing apps like Google Meet, Zoom, Microsoft Teams thrived in the pandemic.

Google Meet is now bringing some respite to personal Gmail account users as the platform is now extending its unlimited video calls for the free version till June this year. Earlier, Google had noted that the free version of Google Meet for personal Gmail accounts that gives unlimited calls will be restricted to 60 minutes starting September last year. This deadline was then extended to March 31, 2021. Now, Google has further extended the unlimited calls for personal Gmail accounts until June 30, 2021.

We are continuing unlimited #GoogleMeet calls (up to 24 hours) in the free version through June 2021 for Gmail accounts Google noted on its WorkSpace account. Last year, Google extended the free capabilities of Google Meet to even personal Gmail accounts in the backdrop of the pandemic. It included 250-person meetings, internal live streaming, and saving call recordings to Drive.

Google Meet was integrated into the Gmail accounts for Indian users last year. Since then, it has rolled out several developments to the platform like blur background, noise cancellation, ability to add more people, among others.

Last month, Google Meet launched new features for teachers and students. It rolled out features that will enable teachers to mute all students, moderation tools, end meetings for everyone, among others. Google Meet also introduced advanced safety locks to block unknown users from gatecrashing the meeting and let teachers control who can chat and present within a meeting.

To start a video call in Google Meet via Gmail, users should go to the Google Meet section that they will find below Drafts. They should select from Start a Meeting and Join a Meeting. After they have given the necessary permissions, Google will set up the camera for the meeting. If users click on Join Now, a new pop-up window with a link to video chat. Users can either copy and send it to people to join it or can manually add participants to the call.

Gmail app users can also disable the feature if they do not use it often or if they feel that the Gmail app is too cluttered. To disable Google Meet, go to the three dots on the top right corner, select Settings, select enable or disable from the General section. Turn off the toggle to disable Google Meet.

Railways will tell passengers to not charge laptops and phones at night, here is why

When you travel by train in India, it is rare that you would have thought about charging your phone onboard. I mean it is not something that will occur to you before you step into a train to get on with your journey. But even though it is one of the most overlooked things, it is important. Charging your phone on a train is something that everyone does. But there is going to be a change to this simple benefit that you avail inside trains.

Indian Railways has decided to put restrictions on charging mobile phones, laptops during certain hours to prevent fire hazards on trains. So, if you are traveling between 11 pm and 5 am on a train, you will not be able to charge your mobile phone or laptop. Senior officials of Indian Railways told PTI on Tuesday that Western Railways already began implementing the new rule on March 16 by cutting off the power supply to these charging docks during these 6 hours. "It is a Railway Board instruction for all railways. We have started implementing it from March 16," CPRO of Western Railway, Sumit Thakur, was quoted as saying in the PTI report.

But if you think you are hearing about this rule suddenly, you will be surprised to know that such a rule has existed before. According to the Southern Railways CPRO B Guganesan, as cited in the report, these instructions are not new but a reiteration of earlier orders of the Railway Board. These instructions were issued back in 2014 when the Commissioner of Railway Safety recommended that charging stations inside trains should be turned off between 11 pm and 5 am, right after a fire incident took place inside the Bangalore-Hazur Sahib Nanded Express. And these orders were issued to all divisions of Indian Railways.

"In view of the recent incidents of fire, we have done the needful. It is a precautionary measure and even earlier the Railway Board had issued such orders. The power from the main switchboard for these points will be switched off from 11 pm to 5 am," Guganesan told PTI.

According to officials, the reiteration of these instructions comes some time after the incidents of fire hazards began to rise in some trains. Turning off charging stations on trains is a precautionary measure. That is because officials have found many incidents of minor fires on long-route trains were a result of overcharging of electronic devices. Several people leave their phones on charge during the nights. After the battery is fully charged, keeping the charger connected causes overcharging.

So, next time when you board a train around 11 pm, make sure your phone is already fully charged and in case it is not, you can carry a power bank with you. Do not rely on charging stations on trains anymore for night journeys.

Oppo F19 launch teased but you may have to wait to buy it in India

Oppo launched the F19 Pro series phones in India recently. Unlike previous times, there were two Pro models in the series, the F19 Pro and the F19 Pro+, the latter being the first 5G phone in the F-series. The vanilla F19 was missing at that time, although Oppo later confirmed that F19 exists and its launch will take place soon. Since then there is no update on this part, at least for the Indian market. Now, Oppo Sri Lanka is teasing the launch of the F19 that will happen soon.

In a post, Oppo Sri Lanka shared a photo of the F19 and the phone looks a little different from the mightier F19 Pro+ but that could be because of the several differences these two phones are supposed to have. The F19 is going to be a vanilla device. This means it will not have 5G and the specifications on this one are also expected to be lower than the F19 Pro+, and even the F19 Pro. In the photo, you can see the F19 has a curved-edge design and triple cameras on the back. One of these cameras is a 48-megapixel sensor, thanks to the description written inside the camera module.

Apart from these two aspects, the photo does not give away anything else. We still do not know what the front of this phone will look like, whether there will be a notch or a punch-hole design on the display, and if there will be a Full-HD display. All of that is a secret right now. Although a tip from Ishan Agarwal mentioned that the F19 will be the slimmest phone with a 5000mAh battery. This may hold true since Oppo is bullish about making thin and slick phones. According to Agarwal, the Oppo F19 price will be under Rs 20,000, which means it will compete with the likes of Redmi Note 10 Pro Max, Poco X3 Pro.

Whatever the specifications of this F19 model may be, there are going to fall a notch or two lower than what the F19 Pro brings. Oppo launched the F19 Pro earlier this month with a MediaTek Helio P95 processor inside coupled with 8GB of RAM. The phone uses a 6.43-inch Super AMOLED display with Full-HD+ resolution. But this display lacks a high refresh rate. It has a punch-hole design with a 16-megapixel camera inside. At the back, the Oppo F19 Pro has a setup of four cameras, including a 48-megapixel main sensor, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle sensor, a 2-megapixel macro sensor, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. This phone runs Android 11 with ColorOS 11 on top.

As far as the launch of the F19 in India is concerned, it seems that may happen after the Sri Lanka launch. Nothing is concrete though.

Activision reduces file size of Modern Warfare, Warzone games in new update but there is a twist

Activision has been generous with several games under its renowned title Call of Duty and has been providing them to players for free in recent times. The games, however, have had a huge file size, taking a lot of space on consoles. Activision now aims to fix that.

The company has announced a new update that will shrink the file size of two Call of Duty versions - Modern Warfare and Warzone. The amount of space saved after the update will vary across platforms on which the games are installed.

Through the update, the Warzone file size will be reduced by between 10.9 GB and 14.2 GB. As for Modern Warfare/ Warzone, the file size will be reduced by between 30.6 GB and 33.6 GB, depending on the platform.

In a blog, Activision states that the new Season 2 Reloaded update will bring file optimisations and streamlined content packs to reduce the file size. In addition to this, the update will come with options to remove individual content packs. This means those who only play a single player can remove Special Ops and Multiplayer packages.

The twist

The optimisations, however, will come after a larger than usual, one-time update for Season Two Reloaded. Activision says that the update is necessary to reduce the overall footprint and promises smaller patch sizes for Modern Warfare and Warzone in the future.

And this file size is not a bit larger than the one for Black Ops Cold War. While the update file size for the paid game is around 7.4 to 14.18 GB, those playing the free-to-play Warzone will need to download a whopping 52.0 to 57.8 GB of the update on either (or both) games.

Again, Activision blames this on the data optimisation required for smaller patches in the future.

The game developer also states that those who want to continue playing Campaign, Multiplayer, and/or Special Ops will need to reinstall the optimised Content Packs. These packs are to be released shortly after the Season Two Reloaded update.

Players who are looking to download the new update for the gleaming hopes of the future or just to keep their games updated should note, while the game′s file size might come down, their internet connection will take the toll. File size of up to 57.8 GB will certainly not be easy to download.

Xiaomi to make smart electric cars, announces around $1.5 billion investment

Xiaomi conducted its major launch for the year today in its home country, launching its new foldable smartphone - the Mi MIX Fold. Amid the sling of products that debuted right after, an idea was shared by Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun that comes as a whole new endeavour for the company. Xiaomi will now be making smart electric automobiles.

There are very less details as of now. What is present is an idea that will eventually bring the company to a segment that Jun was initially reluctant about. Or so was said by the CEO during the launch event. Although in awe of electric vehicles since forever, Jun was not sure whether to pursue their production with the Xiaomi tag or not.

It is the Xiaomi board that ultimately took the decision for him. Jun shared the story of his passion for EVs during the launch. He mentioned how he met Elon Musk back in 2013 to share ideas, and how he has his money tied in 10 EV companies.

To be or not to be

The passion had been there. Jun just did not have the confidence to enter the electric automotive space. After all, it marked a huge deviation from Xiaomi′s marquee products. Jun said that it took the company five years to set up the smartphone business and that there is still more work to be done. EV business could hence prove to be a distraction.

Other than that, it is easy to see the amount of failures in this pursuit. Many have tried and failed. World renowned tech major Dyson is the most recent example. Automotive business, after all, is not one that spares the unprepared. There is a lot to be taken care of with extreme precision, both technically and financially.

It was on the 15th of January this year that the board suggested the company to learn about the prospect of EVs. It asserted that the company had the money as well as the human resources to pursue the ambition. Even more importantly, the company can afford to lose.

The EV plan

For now, Xiaomi has earmarked an investment of CNY 10 billion (around $1.5 billion) for the research and development of electric vehicles. Over the next ten years, it is prepared for an investment reaching up to $10 billion.

Starting off, Xiaomi′s founder and CEO, Lei Jun, will also serve as the CEO of the new smart electric vehicle business. Jun said that the company has a total of 10,000 people working in research and development as of now. It will add another 5,000 to make its new idea work.

Mi Laptop Pro launched

During the launch, the Xiaomi CEO also claimed that the company has the most diverse ecosystem in smart home products. One such area is that of laptops, where it launched two new offerings during the event.

The new laptops are the Mi Laptop Pro 14-inch and the Mi Laptop 15-inch. The highlighted features of the laptops are 11th Gen Intel processors, GeForce MX450 graphic cards, advanced cooling systems, 100W fast charging support and 120Hz refresh rate displays.

Google Maps getting new AI features in refresh, users in India to get air quality info while navigating

Google Maps is undoubtedly among the most widely used Google suite of apps, and the company has announced a bunch of new features to bring improvements. The company says it is on track to add over 100 AI-powered improvements to Google Maps to offer more accurate and up-to-date info while on the go.

Many people may have faced issues while catching a train or a flight while inside the station or airport, and that′s probably because there′s no help on your phone that can help you navigate. Well, that′s about to change with the first major Google Maps update called Live View. One of the major upgrades coming to Google Maps is to navigate indoors with Live View, which uses AR to guide users at places like an airport, transit station or even malls. The best part about this feature is it will help users find the nearest elevator or stairs to change the gate or get to the check-in counter. The phone screen will show arrows to help users indoors.

Google says that the Indoor Live View feature is now live on Android and iOS in a number of malls in Chicago, Long Island, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, San Jose, and Seattle. It will start rolling out in the coming months in select airports, malls, and transit stations in Tokyo and Zurich, with more cities on the way.

Another major update is the info about weather and air quality that will now be shown on the Google Maps app in select countries, including India. Google says that the Maps will show data sourced from partners like The Weather Company, AirNow.gov and the Central Pollution Board. It will start rolling out on Android and iOS in the coming months. The company says that the weather info will be rolled out globally, while the air quality info will launch in Australia, India, and the US, with more countries to be added soon.

Next up is the new eco-friendly route options that will focus on lower fuel consumption which will be based on factors like road incline and traffic congestion. "Soon, Google Maps will default to the route with the lowest carbon footprint when it has approximately the same ETA as the fastest route. In cases where the eco-friendly route could significantly increase your ETA, we′ll let you compare the relative CO2 impact between routes so you can choose. Always want the fastest route? That′s OK too — simply adjust your preferences in Settings," Dane Glasgow, VP of Product, Google Maps, explained in a blog post on Tuesday.

The Eco-friendly routes feature will launch in the US first and be available to Android and iOS users later this year.

Another interesting addition is the grocery pickup option which is a well-thought feature around the pandemic time. Google will start showing pickup options for select groceries, including Instacart and Albertsons Cos. stores in the US on the mobile search page. This is likely to be expanded to Maps.

Apple expands Independent Repair Provider Program in 200 countries including India

Apple has extended its independent repair program globally. The Independent Repair Provider program, launched in 2019 lets any Apple-certified technician perform the repairs. The program is designed for companies interested in offering out-of-warranty repair service for iPhone and Mac, the tech giant has noted in one of its FAQs. Companies interested in performing out-of-warranty iPhone or Mac repairs directly to end users may apply. Qualifying companies can gain access to Apple′s genuine parts, and resources to perform a variety of out-of-warranty for iPhone and Mac repairs like iPhone display and battery replacements, and Mac logic board and video card replacements.

Apple in a blog post noted that the process for certification is simple and free of charge. The program gives repair providers access to genuine Apple parts, tools, repair manuals, and diagnostics to offer safe and reliable repairs for Apple products. Distributors and resellers are not eligible for the program. Although there may not be much of a difference in the cost required to repair an Apple gadget because of the program, more repair providers will become accessible to Apple users.

Apple further noted that the qualifying repair providers can purchase genuine Apple parts and tools at the same price as Apple Authorised Service Providers (AASP)s and Apple Store locations. They can and receive free access to training, repair manuals, and diagnostics. Customers can get more information on repair companies from Apple Support Forums.
